While Algerian Army Sustains Anti-Terrorist Offensive,Courts in Europe and Algeria Punish GIA and its Supporters 
Two major military operations were conducted last week in Biskra and Batna resulting in the elimination of 19 high ranking terrorists. While terrorists are being sought and destroyed by the army, the court system is also handling more terrorism cases.

FOREIGN INVESTMENT TREND  
Official data released by the government and published by the Tunisian news agency show that total foreign direct investment (FDI) in Tunisia in 1998 reached TD 850 million or about $708 million.  The combined FDI in 1997 and 1998 which represent the first two years of the country’s 9th economic plan was TD 1.31 billion.

THE UNEMPLOYMENT CATASTROPHE    
The Algerian think-tank Conseil Economique et Social Algerien (Algerian Economic and Social Council) or CNES stated in its latest report that 250,000 to 300,000 new jobs need to be created every year to maintain the unemployment rate to its current level without even reducing it.  To establish full employment the number of jobs to be created must be between 700,000 and 750,000 per year.

TUNISIA LAW FACES ITS FIRST MAJOR 
CASE OF WHITE COLAR CRIME   
On May 24th, a Tunis court sentenced corporate managers to various jail times of between 5 and 7 years.  The case is certainly Tunisia’s first major white collar crime case and as such, we believe it is worth reporting the details of the case to readers of  Maghreb Weekly Monitor.
