BOURGUIBA DIES AT 96
Former Tunisian president Habib Bourguiba died on Thursday at the age of 96(?). Bourguiba was born on August 3, 1903 in the region of Monastir. His birth date has long been and remains the subject of debate but Tunisians have chosen August 3, 1903, a date picked by his son's Habib JR.

DROUGHT MEASURES
2000 is not a good year for Morocco and for the entire region. Drought continues for a second consecutive year putting whole industries at risk. Hundreds of thousands of farmers are also facing hardship and uncertainty.


Algerian Privatization
Privatization of Mining Sector to Begin in July
This summer, Algeria hopes to sell 48 mines to the private sector. The privatization of the mining sector is considered by many as being very slow but this announcement from the minister of energy and mining is an indication that the current cabinet is hoping to speed up the pace.

Algeria May Get New Opportunities in Asia
Algeria is expected to benefit from increasing demand of LPG in Asia. During the recently held Asia LP Gas conference held in Tokyo, Japan this week, industry representatives warned Korea and Japan, who depend heavily on the Gulf, they must diversify their LPG supply sources .

The Algerian monetary authority, the Conseil de la Monnaie et du Crédit (Council of Currency and Credit) led by the governor of the central bank Banque d’Algerie Abdelouahab Karamane, has issues three new rules that are expected to improve the business climate in Algeria. These new rules are to be positioned as part of Algeria’s effort to streamline and restructure its banking system.
