Algeria's Sheikh Belhadj Gets Support from an Unusual Source, Morocco's Sheikh Yassine Released, But…

Opinions and positions regarding imprisoned Islamists in Algeria and Morocco seem to be shifting. In Algeria, the head of the extreme left wing Workers Party is calling for the release of one of the most strongest opponents of the regime, Sheikh Ali Belhadj. President Bouteflika replied that while the law ruled that Belhadj has to remain in jail, he also said he would himself guarantee Belhadj's rights. In Morocco, Sheikh AbdeslamYassine walked out of his house arrest last week but top government officials have warned him to be cautious when making public statements.
